Possible Shutdown of GPS Network in Crisis (by Carl Limbacher). President Bush has ordered plans for temporarily disabling the U.S. network of global positioning satellites during a national crisis to prevent terrorists from using the navigational technology, the White House said Wednesday. Any shutdown of the network inside the United States would come under only the most remarkable circumstances, said a Bush administration official who spoke to a small group of reporters at the White House on condition of anonymity. The GPS system is vital to commercial aviation and marine shipping. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1302373/posts

A First Look At CES (by Arik Hesseldahl). Garmin, the company that leads the U.S. market in Global Positioning System navigation products, showed me what has to be the simplest in-car navigation system I've yet seen, and I got to play with it briefly while riding around Las Vegas. Turn on the StreetPilot c320 and you're faced with two on-screen buttons, one that takes you to a wizard where you tell it where you want to go and another that simply displays a 3-D map of where you are. http://www.forbes.com/technology/personaltech/2005/01/05/cx_ah_0105tentech.html
Cell phones could track buying habits. Your cell phone could soon be watching where you shop. A patent application by Motorola filed last week is giving a glimpse of what the future may hold for cellular phones -- and to some, it just may be a little scary. According to the application, Motorola inventors have come up with a way to not only beam advertisements to cell phones and other wireless communication devices based on where they are, but also to check if the recipient went into the store. By tracking the phone, the company can then charge advertisers a fee when the cell phone user enters the store that sent the ad. http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-phone08.html

Bottom-up location-aware services promise to enhance people's sense of place (by Howard Rheingold). Together with a busload of other geoweb neophytes, I found myself carrying a GPS-equipped tablet PC around a decommissioned army base overlooking the Golden Gate. I clicked on one of the hotspots on the photomap of our location. A note popped up -- from the late, great Jerry Garcia, who had been quoted in print about the place we were exploring because Fort Scott in San Francisco's Presidio is where Garcia served in the army in his pre-Dead and predead days. I would have enjoyed an audio guitar lick to go with the text excerpt from a Garcia bio, but I got the point -- location-aware technologies could make a deeper sense of place possible. Deep place is not about the technology or the political standards wars, but about the experiential possibilities of the geoweb. http://www.thefeature.com/article?articleid=101208&ref=4662182
Shooting the Ghosts. GloVentures, LLC, announced the upcoming release of Glofun RayGun, a location game for cell phones. The game premise: A cell phone loaded with RayGun software emits "spectral" energy that lets you attract and track ghosts. Unfortunately, the energy also annoys the ghosts, so you'd better "ionize" them before they get to you. The twist: RayGun is a GPS game, and to play it you have to move through the real world-that is, running around using your real feet. http://www.glofun.com/

An elderly motorist driving along a 130km/h expressway in eastern France caused a crash when he followed the advice of his onboard GPS computer - and made a U-turn. Police said the driver and the occupants of the vehicle he ran into escaped unharmed from the collision, but it could have been much worse. The man told officers his car GPS had told him to "make a U-turn immediately" as he drove along lost near the town of Nancy in search of a hotel. He did so, not realising the limitations of his satellite navigation device, which guides using verbal directions. http://www.theadvertiser.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5936,11553673%5E401,00.html

Whatever happened to SVG? It’s ready for another close-up but is not up for a starring role (by Jon Udell). In 2000, XML co-inventor Tim Bray said: “SVG is going to change the face of the Web.” If that prediction had come true, we’d have used SVG to visualize the results of the recent election. Instead, as Macromedia’s Chief Software Architect Kevin Lynch noted on his Weblog, the election was closely divided, but developers voted overwhelmingly to use Flash for interactive maps, dynamic tables, and live charts. SVG’s inventors imagined a different scenario. Instead of bundling data and interaction together in a binary SWF (Shockwave Flash) file, we’d deliver data in a declarative XML format. The data would support scripted interaction, but it could also be reused in a variety of ways. http://www.infoworld.com/article/04/11/19/47OPstrategic_1.html
Multimap announced the deployment of its “Travel Directions” service on Cardiff University’s web site. The new service enables students, lecturers and visitors to map their route to the University’s 60-strong portfolio of premises. Location Based Services – MapPoint Location Server and GPS (by Steve Milroy). LBS solutions involve the use of position information about a user’s particular location with intelligent applications and solutions to provide relevant information and services. With automated acquisition of user location; LBS scenarios are becoming more compelling and applications more useful. LBS solutions in their simplest form can include providing relevant maps, driving directions, proximity searches for Points of Interest such as a nearby ATM, and more advanced enterprise scenarios such as intelligent dispatch, field service and geo-fencing. These solutions often involve multiple application types including web based or client/server and mobile applications providing LBS on Pocket PC, Tablet PC and other mobile devices. This article compares and contrasts Microsoft’s MapPoint Location Server and more traditional GPS devices in LBS scenarios. We will explore technology, architecture, costs and the relevant approach for different solutions. http://directionsmag.com/article.php?article_id=671&trv=1&PHPSESSID=bc7c501fbdc06dbcbddc5d3f03260099
Looking to get location-based services into cell phones? The best way to do it might be to start on the gaming side and let the rest of the applications fall into place. To that end, Blister Entertainment Inc. launched what it says is North America's first GPS-based cell phone game. The game is called "Swordfish" and is in play by Bell Mobility subscribers in Canada. Players use a proprietary applications platform embedded in the phone to scan for and locate virtual schools of swordfish. Players must then move to where the fish are located and then reel the fish in, with their cell phones serving as the fishing rod. Scores will be kept and players can track their progress against other users on a national leader board. http://www.telecomweb.com/news/1096556881.htm
As any man who often travels with a woman is aware, knowing where you're going is imperative. Getting lost can be the cause of approximately 428 stops per trip to ask where you're going, and a man shouldn't have to ask a gas station attendant for directions. The WayPoint is a PDA designed for navigational assistance. There are four main buttons on the front of the WayPoint: The Heart Button - gives you quick access to your favorite locations, The Detour Button - it'll find an alternate route for you, The Information Button - gives you detailed info on things like you're exact speed and current location, The Navigation Button - to gain access to things like traffic and weather information. http://gear.ign.com/articles/560/560663p1.html?fromint=1
There is now a solution for all those who haven't been able to warm to the idea of a PDA or built-in navigation system. It requires no additional equipment and is relatively unbeatable in terms of mobility: Navigation via mobile phone. Your cell phone becomes a mobile navigation system with our newest intelligent on-board navigation system, Destinator SP (Smart Phone). The precise location is calculated by a continuous evaluation of the GPS data received via cable or Bluetooth. The Destinator SP navigation software and the up-to-date map data are installed via the memory card provided. The system is delivered with the latest maps, can be virtually extended as the user requires and is ready to use on delivery. The route calculation occurs on the mobile phone. The calculated routes can be displayed in 2D, 3D or practical step-by-step pictograms. The audio guidance which complements the visual directions is available in various languages and allows the driver to remain fully concentrated. Destinator SP very quickly calculates an alternate route should you leave the suggested route, thus allowing you to react calmly and quickly to traffic delays. http://www.destinator1.com/news/DestSP.pdf

Let Your Mobile Do the Pointing (by Mark Frauenfelder). We'd be lost without the Earth's magnetic field -- literally. But thanks to the liquefied iron and nickel swirling around in our planet's core, people and migratory animals have learned to use the resultant magnetic field to help them figure out where they need to go. Birds have built-in magnetic sensory apparatus that they use for navigation, but people must resort to a tool called a compass. Compasses have been used for navigation for over 2,000 years, and the basic design hasn't changed much, until the 1960s, when electronic magnetic sensors were developed. A tiny magnetic sensor in your mobile phone could turn the planet into a point-and-click Yellow Pages directory. http://www.thefeature.com/article?articleid=101056&threshold=-1&ref=3369466

Tampereella pelitutkimusta EU-tasolla. Tänä syksynä käynnistyy Tampereella laaja eurooppalainen tutkimushanke, joka tutkii pervasiivista pelaamista. Pervasiiviset pelit muodostuvat osaksi pelaajien tavallista arkielämää. Integrated Project on Pervasive Gaming (IPerG) kestää 3,5 vuotta.
Frost & Sullivan: Mobile Location Based Services To Rebound As Enabler For Value-Added Services. Launched as one of the killer applications for WAP and as the ideal marketing tool for mobile operators’ customers, location based services (LBS) have fallen far short of expectations. To maximise potential, LBS technology (offering location-sensitive information and tracking services) should be leveraged as an enabler for value-added services rather than as a stand-alone service revenue generator, reveals new analysis from F&S. http://www.frost.com/prod/servlet/press-release.pag?docid=21084585&ctxixpLink=FcmCtx1&ctxixpLabel=FcmCtx2

Brunton's ATLAS™ GPS (by: D. Miserandino) - Never get lost again. Over the past few weekends I have been field-testing a "Global Positioning System". The Atlas GPS is a contemporary compass that is held in the palm of one hand. After a few buttons are pushed, a tiny map on a backlight screen shows up that tells where you are and what direction to travel to get to your destination. The manual has a "read me first" section that you only have to read halfway through to get the main idea of how to operate the Atlas. The manual even has several action sections that are designed to get you in the woods real fast so you can annoy the squirrels and fish. http://thecelebritycafe.com/guide/1213.html
American tourist gets lost following 90-year-old map! A 79-year-old American tourist got lost in Bayreuth, Germany, because he was using a guidebook that was 90 years old. According to Ananova, Hank Edwards ended up stuck in a forest for two days because most of the attractions mentioned in the book have long since disappeared. According to a police spokesperson, most of Bayreuth had changed due to the two World Wars and a massive reconstruction program. http://news.newkerala.com/world-news/index.php?action=fullnews&id=1600
Voice-Guided Mobile Phones to Complement Guide Dogs. The system, developed by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, provides relief for the everyday life of the visually impaired, but offers opportunities also for people with normal eyesight. The benefit of the guidance system is the introduction of a voice interface for a normal mobile phone. The system is constantly in touch with public and real time databases: bus, train and tram routes and schedules, information about roadworks, news and weather services. The system helps in planning the trip and guides to the next stop. It also informs of the arrival of the vehicle and tells where to get off. With the help of satellite positioning, a visually impaired person can also store walking routes that have already been tested and proven good. http://e.finland.fi/netcomm/news/showarticle.asp?intNWSAID=26355

Making the Ultimate Map - When digital geography teams up with wireless technology and the Web, the world takes on some new dimensions (by Steven Levy). There it is, that good old pale blue dot in all its earthly glory, right there on your computer screen. It's a familiar sight, even from a sky-high perspective experienced only by astronauts and angels. But hold on. By mousing around and clicking, you swoop like Superman, down, down, down, to a location on terra firma. Coastlines and rivers come into view, then cities, houses and even cars. And then, with another mouseclick, you can see the roads labeled, highlight the high-crime areas and locate the nearest Chinese restaurant. http://msnbc.msn.com/id/5094082/site/newsweek/
NAVTEQ has enhanced NAVTEQ(TM) maps of North America and Europe with elevation contours: graphics that appear on navigation systems' map displays indicating variations in geography along a driver's route. Mobility Revisited for the Enterprise (by Majdi Zahran). Mobile computing is defined as using a portable computing device while in transit or in a remote location. It's basically computing on the go. This is a general definition and any device that meets these criteria could technically be characterized as mobile. The Tablet PC is definitely mobile and is powerful enough to run desktop applications. Many mobile users welcome such devices and see the value of having such power, performance and capacity. At the same time, some software solutions vendors focus on the form factor of such devices and loose site of the true mobile requirements in the field and the problems it is expected to solve. http://directionsmag.com/article.php?article_id=599

Calgary-based KnowledgeWhere's location-based game called Swordfish will be launched in May in Quebec and Ontario. Aimed at Bell Mobility customers, it will be available in Alberta in July. According to reports, it's North America's first cell phone game that uses GPS technology. The game involves trying to catch fish which move around. And, so the player must move about to drop his or her line in the right spot. Just as in real life, perhaps, the bigger fish are tougher to catch. The game runs a few dollars, but I suspect uses airtime of some sort, as well. http://www.blisterent.com/home.htm

NAC Technology introduces a representation called Natural Area Code (NAC) to unify the representations of all area codes, geographic coordinates, map grids, street addresses, postal codes and property identifiers of the world. An eight or ten character NAC (also called Universal Address) can uniquely specify every building, house, bus stop, parking meter, fire hydrant, street light, sewage exit, etc anywhere in the world. A six character NAC can specify every square kilometer area on the earth. A four character NAC can be used to represent every city size area in the world. Using NAC instead of street addresses and place names to specify locations and areas in all location applications can reduce 80% of input characters, avoid difficulties in inputting addresses with foreign characters, eliminate errors from address databases and extend geographic coverage to all locations and areas no matter whether there are addresses or not. http://www.directionsmag.com/press.releases/index.php?duty=Show&id=9047

Viranomaisverkko, Virve, joutui Konginkankaan suuronnettomuudessa ensimmäisen kerran tosi koetukselle. Virven toiminta nopeutti pelastustoimia merkittävästi, kun kaikki viranomaiset pystyivät kytkeytymään samaan verkkoon ja kommunikoimaan keskenään. Verkon erikoisominaisuuksiin kuuluu tarpeen mukaisten puheryhmien perustaminen. A man in Saskatchewan, forced to cut off two of his two fingers after being trapped under a rock picker for nearly three days, has developed a device to prevent similar tragedies in the future. System has three triggers. One button sends a signal notifying an answering system of the exact location of your emergency. The second button automatically activates if the person is unconscious. The third button tells the system there's a problem, but it's not an emergency. Osiowy said he came up with the idea when waiting for help while he was trapped. He said he kept wishing he had some kind of satellite-based mapping system that would alert others about his predicament and lead them to where he was trapped. http://www.cbc.ca/stories/2004/03/03/canada/osiowy_040303

The Mobile Phone Identifies Its User's Situation - VTT has developed a service platform which provides the mobile user with services appropriate to the user's location and situation. The service identifies the user's situation and anticipates the information needs, thus reducing the need to browse through service menus. Such situations include e.g. being at home, at work, at an event or hobby or with a friend. The method makes it clearly easier to access the content that is needed at any given time. http://www.e.finland.fi/netcomm/news/showarticle.asp?intNWSAID=22023
(In Finnish) http://www.tekes.fi/ajankohtaista/uutisia/uutis_tiedot.asp?id=3244&paluu

Police, firefighters and emergency medical technicians are just beginning to use Internet-connected cell phones, personal digital assistants, handheld computers and laptops that provide views into spatial data held in Web servers. But as applications have begun to be deployed, it has become apparent that map symbology is a major issue. Maps are collections of symbols whose value depends on whether users understand the symbols. The difficulty faced by solution providers is that in the new world of Web mapping for first responders, spatial data--and instructions for presentation--may come from various servers. http://www.geoplace.com/gw/2003/0312/0312opng.asp
Over half the women employed by small companies want a personal security alarm service via their mobile phone. Men want a satellite navigation service with map displays (GPS). But top of the list, for men and women is to be able to use the same phone for all calls, via the normal network as well as the mobile network. These facts emerge from a recent Telia survey. Telia used market survey company Quickwise to ask people what services they want in their mobile phones. Quickwise polled 1457 Swedes, in companies with ten or more employees. The answers are summarised in a report "Mobile services most wanted". http://www.newsonline.nu/release.asp?PmId=33076&ComId=5455

Stabiilia mobiilia ja väljiä chat-huoneita. Mobiilipalvelun käyttäjä on yleensä yksin eikä hanakasti suosittele palvelua toiselle, suomalaisväitös paljastaa. Tämän paljastaa Jyväskylän yliopistossa tänään tarkastettava Anssi Mattilan taloustieteiden väitöskirja Understanding Seamless Mobile Service Interface Between Customer and Technology: An Empirical Study. VTT:n erikoistutkija Jani Mäntyjärven väitöstyön tuloksena syntyi mm. sovellus, jossa matkapuhelimen käyttäjä voi jakaa omia tilannetietojaan kertomatta itse soittajalle olevansa esimerkiksi konsertissa. Mobiilien laitteiden tarjoamia palveluja ja sovelluksia käytetään usein arkipäivän tilanteissa. Käyttäjälle voidaan tarjota oikeaan tilanteeseen oikeaa tietoa oikeassa muodossa, jos laitteiden käyttötilanne ja toimintaympäristö tiedetään. (In Finnish) http://www.vtt.fi/vtt/uutta/uutinen523.htm

Business-ready handhelds. Handhelds are becoming ever more powerful and feature-rich. But are they ready to replace the mobile professional’s notebook yet? With bigger screens, faster CPUs, more memory, better wireless connectivity and input options, and more sophisticated software than their more consumer-orientated siblings, these business-ready handhelds can do much more than simply keep track of your appointments and contacts. At the same time, they may not include some of the entertaining extras -- such as built-in MP3 players or cameras -- that you'll find on more populist models. http://reviews.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/handhelds/0,39023880,39117483,00.htm
Kännykkä mukaan metsään. Kännykässä tai kämmenmikrossa näkyy kulkureittimme kasvitieteellisessä puutarhassa. Tieltä ei paljon poiketa. "Edessänne on punakoivu. Ensi kesään mennessä tallennetaan kasvitieteellisen puutarhan 5000:sta kasvista 500-1000 lajin tiedot järjestelmään. Itse kukin voi valita ne tiedot, joita haluaa. "Tähän voidaan syöttää karttatiedot kasveista. OGC's WMS Cookbook: Recipes for Web Mapping. When you travel to a new city do you go online to prepare for the trip? It's easy to find a highway, train, or subway map, even a highly detailed city map with your destination marked on it. But can you get the highway, subway, and city information on the same map? In most cities in the United States, the answer is no. But if the providers of that information all used OGC WMS, it would be just as easy to get all that information in one display as it is to get three or four separate screens today. You get the information you need when you need it, and the providers maintain control over their own data. http://www.geospatial-online.com/geospatialsolutions/article/articleDetail.jsp

Interoperability – Bonus or Necessity? (by: Preetha Pulusani) Where were you when the recent blackout in the northeast hit? Were you trapped in an elevator that was going nowhere? Or sitting in an airport listening to the announcement that all planes had been grounded? If you were not one of the thousands of people whose lives were interrupted by this single event, you may consider yourself fortunate indeed. The Open GIS Consortium (OGC) has been pushing standards and interoperability to the geospatial community and IT industry. The events of 9/11 and global issues such as tracking diseases, environmental concerns, and natural disasters have heightened awareness of the need to share data across departments and organizations. At times, data sharing can even mean the difference between life and death. http://www.directionsmag.com/editorials.php?article_id=421

Mobilizing Existing Users of Geographic Information? The Dumb Pipe Approach for LBS (by: Jonathan Spinney): In an article entitled, A Brief History of LBS and How OpenLS Fits Into the New Value Chain, I presented two architecture models or implementation strategies for location-based services within wireless carrier networks. Phase I LBS architecture models are early-generation approaches. Phase II architecture models are fundamentally different in that they assume all spatially-enabling technology (MPC/GMLC, LES, and GIS) and the applications built with them are central to a wireless carrier’s location-based systems. http://www.directionsmag.com/article.php?article_id=411

The geographic databases come on CD’s and can be copied to the hard-drive or can be left on the CD. XMap will automatically search your hard-drive and CD drive for the datasets when the program starts. The Handheld Export Tab in XMap cuts a map, which can be sent to a GPS, Palm OS or Pocket PC device. http://www.directionsmag.com/features.php?feature_id=100

Salamasta saa hälytyksen kännykkään. Lähestyvästä ukkosrintamasta voi halutessaan tilata hälytyksen kännykkään. Ilmatieteen laitoksen salamapalvelu lähettää tekstiviestin, jos 40-60 kilometrin etäisyydelle iskee muutaman minuutin aikana vähintään viisi salamaa. Käyttäjä määrittelee paikan, johon palvelu tilataan. Sen voi tehdä hyvinkin tarkkaan, eli muiden kännykkään tilattavien sääpalveluiden tavoin salamahälytyksen saa vaikka kesämökin pihalle. Palvelu kertoo myös, missä suunnassa salamaniskuja on havaittu. (In Finnish) http://plus.kaleva.fi/html/JTpage330193.html

A new smartphone from Finland lets users scroll and zoom simply by using their hands. A mobile phone that can be controlled through a user's hand movements has been created by MyOrigo, a company based in Finland. MyDevice measures 124mm by 59mm by 22.5mm, and most of its front face is taken up by a touch-sensitive colour screen. What sets the device apart, is its user interface: several features have been added in an attempt to improve usability and functionality. A motion control means that the screen automatically adjusts to match the orientation at which a user is holding their MyDevice. To switch from a portrait view to a landscape view, the user just rotates the handset by 90 degrees. http://news.zdnet.co.uk/story/0,,t269-s2136710,00.html

His way, her way — which is better? (By Jon Bonné) You know the drill: He’s driving, she’s navigating. He’s sure, yes sure, that they need to turn left. Not for another two blocks, she insists, just like the directions say. So who has the better sense of direction? They both do, a new study says, but in different ways that have implications for how to make maps and write directions. And believe it or not, people usually do know exactly how good a sense of direction they have. The Canadian study, published in the most recent issue of the Annals of the American Association of Geographers, examined how people navigated through a specific area guided only by their sense of direction. http://www.msnbc.com/news/922592.asp
You Won't Get Your Fix from a GPS System (By Chris Partridge). Why do we switch off reality checks with big technology? Satellite navigation has been a brilliant success in many areas, but GPS doesn't work indoors. Ease-of-use remains the primary barrier to mass-market mobile data services, says SmartTrust. Complex handset configuration and service activation could hold back greater revenue potential. Many mobile users are still perplexed by complicated handset configuration and service access. That’s the message from SmartTrust, who suggests the slower than expected uptake of data services, as reported by many of the industry’s analysts, is a result of poor user experiences. Many operators see data services as a key driver towards increased ARPU, with many now offering a portfolio of non-voice services. These include picture messaging, mobile games, infotainment and m-commerce. http://www.smarttrust.com/showpressrelease.asp?ID=96

Get "Tough" With Your PDA! (By Glenn Letham): Here's the scenario, you're out in the field, at the beach, on a boat, or even in your backyard. You collect data, meticulously streaming coordinates from your GPS, loading data attributes into a database, and even storing digital images and video which are automatically captured, associated with, and linked to the data you are so patiently gathering. Suddenly, you trip over a stump and drop your PDA; or perhaps you slip in some mud and go head-over-heels, your PDA landing in 6 inches of water. http://spatialnews.geocomm.com/features/ruggedpda/

Writing Good Apps for the Wireless Web. Attention to the user experience and using the strengths of wireless devices are essential to creating successful wireless apps. Smart wireless Web application designers focus on the unique characteristics of mobile devices, leveraging the good characteristics and avoiding the bad. The good characteristics include time sensitivity and location awareness. The bad are the small size of the devices and tight bandwidth. Input is also a challenge, displays are small, and stylus-based input will never be as efficient as a full keyboard and mouse. http://www.fawcette.com/dotnetmag/2003_06/magazine/columns/wireless/default_pf.asp

Hewlett Packard Laboratories is exploring the implications of Web access using a mobile, continuously connected handheld device as a navigation tool for finding places, people and services. The project illustrates both the explosive potential for interaction between a moving human and a Web database, and the difficulty of firmly connecting a mobile device to the real world. The concept behind the demonstration is elegant. Why couldn't a user of a palmtop computer request a particular kind of service — an Indian restaurant, say, or a tire repair shop that is open — point the handheld down the street and have the display show him what lies in that direction? http://www.eet.com/sys/news/OEG20030307S0029

Maptech introduces two new ways to have high quality topographic maps and nautical charts in GPS ready PDAs for professional and outdoor recreational enthusiasts. GPS receivers are great tools for street directions and noting location. But once you go off-road, into the woods or on the water, the GPS maps do not show the features that you really need, like the lay of the land or depth of the water in a realistic way. The Maptech solution combines Pocket PCs and Palms powered with a clip-on GPS to display Maptech's USGS topographic maps and NOAA nautical charts. Solution brings a new level of mapping and GPS technology to a wide spectrum of map users like land surveyors, utility workers, real estate professionals, law enforcement officers, fire fighters, foresters; as well as hikers, hunters, boaters, fishermen, and outdoor adventurers. http://spatialnews.geocomm.com/dailynews/2003/feb/20/news1.html

Current wireless location based services are growing much slower than expected. One of the major problems is the inefficiency of geographic coordinates such as longitude/latitude and UTM. These coordinates require more than 20 characters at a resolution of meters that are difficult for people to remember and communicate. They are also difficult to be displayed on and input into small wireless devices. All these make geographic coordinates nearly useless to general consumers. http://www.wirelessdevnet.com/features/nacjan03/indexx.html
